About the poster: This vintage exhibition poster was created for the 1983 exhibition of Jean-Paul Riopelle's work at the Galerie Maeght Lelong, which represented the Quebecois artist in France. Founded in 1936, Galerie Maeght was a French modern art gallery as well as one of the foremost Parisian printers of the time, regularly producing the lithographs for their exhibitions. Featuring Riopelle's lithograph "L'Oie du Nord" ("The Goose of the North"), this striking original poster is in excellent condition and is ready to be framed.

About the artist: Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923-2002) was a Montreal-born artist who became the first Canadian painter (since James Wilson Morrice) to attain widespread international recognition. In the 1940s, his style evolved from Surrealism to Lyrical Abstraction (related to Abstract Expressionism), in which he used a myriad of intricate cubes and triangles of multicoloured elements, faceted with a palette knife, spatula, or trowel, on often large canvases to create powerful atmospheres. His work is now largely characterized as being in the Abstract Expressionist style, and his paintings were sometimes even compared to Jackson Pollock's!
