About the poster : This exhibition poster, featuring a classic Japanese painting of cranes and pine trees, was created for "Le Japon des Shogun", a major cultural event held at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from June 21 to September 10, 1989. The exhibition showcased The Tokugawa Collection, one of the most prestigious private art collections from Japan, linked to the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years during the Edo period (1603–1868).
The artwork on the poster, titled Oiseaux et fleurs (Birds and Flowers) by Kano Koi (1691–1755), exemplifies the refined aesthetics of the Edo period. Cranes, often symbols of longevity and good fortune, are depicted with grace and delicacy, set amidst a serene natural setting. The pine trees in the composition are also traditional symbols of endurance and resilience in Japanese art.
