Artist: Ernst Deutsch-Dryden
This mini lithographic poster for Admirals Casino is by Ernst Deutsch-Dryden, published in a 1927 book edited by Dr. Walter Schubert. Titled "Die Deutsche Werbe Graphik," it was published in Berlin by Francken and Lang. It is the only edition of this important study of a great era of German graphic design featuring posters, packaging, advertising, book illustrations, programs for theater, and sports. Illustrated mostly with tipped-in color plates of work by Bernhard, Hohlwein, Klinger, Preetorius, Gipkens, Kleukens, Cissarz, Pechstein and many others, this book and the illustrations contained within it are considered highly collectable and very, very rare.
Ernst Deutsch-Dryden (1887-1938) was an Austrian costume designer and commercial artist. On July 3, 1931 Ernst Deutsch's name was finally officially changed from German (Deutsch) to Dryden. His advertising posters, created until 1918, belong to the "golden age of poster art". Besides Lucian Bernhard, Ludwig Hohlwein, Hans Rudi Erdt and his Austrian colleagues, Dryden was one of the most important representatives of the advertising art. In 1926 Deutsch-Dryden moved to Paris, where he took over the art direction of the magazine "Die Dame". At the same time he also designed for Coco Chanel and created daring promotional work as a graphic designer for customers and products such as "Bugatti," "Cinzano," "Canadian Club Whiskey," or even the perfume "Eau de Vie."
