About the Poster: Poster art is one of Switzerland's major contributions to decorative arts.
For more than a century, Swiss graphic designers have given a strong personality to their art by synthesizing very different influences and cultures. The colours and layout of this poster clearly indicate the evolution from Art Nouveau and Art Deco into a more modern approach to graphic design: gone are the Art Nouveau flourishes and the straight lines of Art Deco: this joyous examination of Basel's most famous building, the Spalentor is presented in all it's glory.

About the Spalentor: The Spalentor or Spalen Gate is a medieval gate located in Basel, Switzerland. It is a remnant of the old fortification surrounding the city and is one of the most beautiful monumental gates in the country. Of the seven gates of the outer wall existing then, only three remain.
