About the Poster: This calendar promotes the purchase of American war bonds during the Second World War. The artwork depicting two hands shaking was created two years earlier, in 1941, by artist John Atherton. Atherton submitted the design to MoMA’s National Defense Poster Competition. After winning the competition, the design became a popular propaganda image promoting the participation of American citizens in the war effort.

Atherton’s artwork was printed two years after its original creation on a green background, alongside a calendar, demonstrating the lasting effectiveness and popularity of the design.

During WWII, the United States issued war bonds initially labeled “Defense Bonds.” They were later renamed “War Bonds” following the attack on Pearl Harbor. War bonds sold in the United States helped the government raise approximately $185 billion and were purchased by more than 84 million Americans. Buying war bonds was promoted as an act of patriotism, while wartime artists used powerful imagery to encourage public participation in the war effort.

The poster is in overall good condition, with visible fold lines, a small tear, and a small hole. Please see the pictures for additional details. Ready to frame!
