As opposed to the French who pioneered the lithographic process, Cuban poster production in the 1950s and 60s was primarily centered around silk screening. Images were built up through layers of paint rather than ink, resulting in a poster which more closely resembled a painting than a litho. The printing tradition continues with CartelON, a project devoted to promoting silkscreening in Cuba by organizing graphic design contests where creatives of all ages can be inspired to explore screen printing.
About the poster: This poster is part of a series created to celebrate San Lázaro. San Lázaro is celebrated in Cuba on December 17th by thousands of people who honor him for his association with healing, protection, and miracles. In Cuban culture, San Lázaro is closely connected to Babalú-Ayé, an Afro-Cuban deity associated with illness and healing. Many Cubans pray to him to ask for health, give thanks for answered prayers, and fulfill promises they have made. Devotees often visit the Sanctuary of San Lázaro in El Rincón, sometimes walking long distances or crawling as an act of faith and sacrifice. The celebration reflects Cuba’s rich blend of Catholic and African religious traditions. This poster was a part of the “San Lázaro-From Larnaca to Havana” Contest, convened by CartelON, with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Havana.
