As opposed to the French who pioneered the lithographic process, Cuban poster production in the 1950s and 60s was primarily centered around silk screening. Images were built up through layers of paint rather than ink, resulting in a poster which more closely resembled a painting than a litho. The printing tradition continues with CartelON, a project devoted to promoting silkscreening in Cuba by organizing graphic design contests where creatives of all ages can be inspired to explore screen printing.
About the movie: Los Sobre Vivientes (1979), directed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, is a Cuban satirical comedy about the wealthy Orozco family, who refuse to accept the social changes brought by the Cuban Revolution. Retreating to their country estate, they attempt to preserve their privileged lifestyle and traditional hierarchy. As their resources dwindle and the outside world moves on, their isolation intensifies. The family gradually descends into absurdity, conflict, and barbarism. Through dark humor, Alea critiques the stubbornness of the old ruling class and the consequences of clinging to a vanished social order.
